Travel Photos – North America: Mexico
Locations visited during trips to Quintana Roo in April 2007, February 2008, and July 2008 included Cancun, Isla Mujeres, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Xel-Há, Bacalar, Chetumal, and Cozumel.
We visited Mexico for school spring break in April 2007 and did exactly what we wanted – essentially nothing – at an all-inclusive resort. We enjoyed the relaxing time, but a return trip a year later was even more enjoyable at Playa Azul on Isla Cozumel. We acted like tourists on that first trip and went to Xel-Há water park and the Mayan ruins at Tulum.
Chetumal
Then, in Feb. 2008, I made a rapid 3-day trip to Q. Roo in order to visit a hotel and potential conference site in Chetumal. This city will probably never become a major tourist attraction but that was part of its allure. A guidebook proclaims it to be a working-class city. I enjoyed my brief visit because the people were genuinely nice, the food was terrific and authentic, not Tex-Mex, and it has a charm of its own. On the return from Chetmual to Cancun, I made brief stops in Bacalar and Playa del Carmen.
Cancun & Cozumel
We returned to Cancun for a scientific conference in July 2008, which included a banquet dinner on Isla Mujeres. While the Cancun hotel and pool were excellent, we never really left the hotel strip except for that banquet dinner on the island. The following week, I was co-organizing another meeting on Isla Cozumel. Of the places we visited, Isla Cozumel was far better than Cancun for our preference of less numerous tourists and gentler ocean experience for the kids (and us) to snorkel.
