Travel Photos – Europe: Hungary
Locations visited in May 2007 included Budapest, Pécs, and Siklós.
A business trip took me to Pécs, Hungary for eight days in May, 2007. Pécs is the second largest city in the country after its capital Budapest. Residents of the city were extremely friendly and tourists were scarce, which only made trying to converse in English a challenge, but do not let that deter you because currency exchange is generally favorable since Hungary has not yet switched to the Euro. The city will be the European capital of culture in 2010 and I am optimistic to travel there again that summer.
Climate in Pécs is temperate and more like the Mediterranean countries to its south rather than the colder climates of its neighboring cities to the north, like Budapest. Just a few of the highlights of the city include the Székesegyház cathedral, the old Roman wall surrounding the city, an early Christian mausoleum, the "locks of love," the Zsolnay Museum, and the Mosque of Pasha Gazi Kassim.
Siklós
A short distance from Pécs and near the border with Croatia is the town of Siklós. I enjoyed a relaxing day here including a tour of the castle with town natives followed by lunch and pálinka (schnapps made with home-grown fruit), before heading to the nearby hills to help dig a ditch on a vineyard. I volunteered my labor since I would have spent an entire weekend working in the garden if I were at home. We made short work of the ditch digging and sat around tasting the wine made right there in the cellar before returning to town for a terrific evening and dinner with these new friends.
