Locations visited included Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Apeldoorn, Wittem, and Margraten.
Upon arriving on a Friday morning at Amsterdam's Schipol Airport, we traversed west and southwestward to Noordwijk aan Zee on the North Sea. Having spent much more time on the west side of the Atlantic Ocean, we decided to wave across the great ocean to all our relatives from its eastern shores. Then we bypassed most of metro Amsterdam and visited the windmills in Zaanse Schans. Afterwards we looped northeastward to cross the Ijsselmeer on the Houtribdijk dike, then passed southeast through Lelystad before arriving utterly exhausted from jet lag in Apeldoorn for our first night.
The following day, we rode bikes in the Nationaal Park De Hoge Veluwe and visited the Rijksmuseum Kröller-Möller that houses hundreds of works by Vincent van Gogh. Holland is certainly a great place for bicycling and this park makes it simple with hundreds of bikes ready for visitors to borrow. Also in the park boundaries is Jachtslot Sint-Hubertus, seen in some of the photos here.
Later that afternoon in the park, we drove to Rotterdam for a visit with friends and an overnight stay at the New York Hotel. On Sunday, we had to cross nearly the full country west to east because of a work conference in Hamburg, Germany starting Monday morning. We would return south from Hamburg to Maastricht the following weekend on a pass-through journey to Luxemburg.
Our passage back through Holland after a business week in Hamburg was brief but included one night's stay at Kasteel Wittem. The next morning, we accidently discovered the Henri Chapelle cemetery and memorial for American WW II soldiers at Margraten. The shear number of graves (7989) was overwhelming and we had no idea this site existed until we saw an American flag on a hill as we were simply intending to drive to Luxemburg. The visit and walk on the cemetery grounds was very moving.
We crossed through Belgium briefly on our trek to Luxemburg with our next destination in Clervaux. We would certainly be returning to Belguim later to complete the round trip to Amsterdam, but only after a country tour through Luxemburg.
