Gregory Thompson is an atmospheric scientist working at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, CO. Using real-time weather data, Greg often applies his weather knowledge to his advantage to create the photos found in these on-line galleries. Being able to forecast specific cloud types hours or days in advance increases his odds of photographing certain subjects.
Greg's photos have appeared in a number of publications including various calendars
and books. Most recently, a lightning photograph appeared on the front cover of
Mike Nelson's
latest book,
Colorado Weather Almanac
History
Greg grew up in Charm City, Baltimore, MD and started shooting photos with a Pentax K-1000 SLR camera in 1987. The photo bug was slow to bite at first, but inspiration really hit when a college course with Dr. Craig F. Bohren required students to photo certain weather phenomena and write essays describing the subject scientifically. After graduating from Penn State in 1990, Greg was further inspired by the spectacular displays of nature in Colorado while attending graduate school at Colorado State Univ. Combining his formal training in Meteorology with his self-taught photography skills, Greg started to chase severe thunderstorms every spring and summer. Since obtaining a Masters of Science degree in Atmospheric Science under the guidance of Dr. William Cotton in 1993, he has worked at NCAR and continues to apply his weather knowledge and forecasting skills to chase and photograph storms.
